From Immigration Bus to Luxury Motorhome
Jan 03, 2025What do you do with a bus once used to process immigrants at the Texas-Mexico border? For our family, it became the foundation for an unforgettable adventure—a luxury motorhome conversion. Here’s how we found, bought, and transformed this unique piece of history into a cozy, travel-ready home on wheels.
Who Are We?
Hi! We’re the Shinpaughs, a family of four who travels full-time to create memories now. Our journey to motorhome living began in February 2021 with an innocent visit to the Prevost show—and we’ve never looked back.
A Chance Encounter with Luxury
When our friends invited us to the Prevost show, we didn’t think much of it. We already had a motorhome and weren’t seriously shopping for an upgrade. But the moment we walked through the doors, we were hooked. The sleek designs, luxurious interiors, and sheer craftsmanship of these motorhomes left us awe-struck.
The idea of owning one? It felt like a distant dream, especially with price tags upwards of $2 million. But something shifted that day.
Why a Prevost?
While touring the show, we realized Prevost buses offered something unique: customization. Unlike traditional RVs, Prevost motorhomes start as a chassis and motor. Converters then design the interior to fit your needs.
We also learned many of these buses were originally built for bands, meaning they often came with 6 to 12 bunks—perfect for solving our biggest problem: outgrowing our kids’ short bunk beds.
Solving a Problem, Dreaming Big
Our kids’ bunks in the slide-out of our old RV were only six feet long—fine for little kids, but not for growing teens. As they stretched out, we needed a solution. Talking with Nashville Coach, a Prevost converter specializing in band configurations, opened a world of possibilities.
“What if we built extra-long bunk beds into a bus designed for our family?” we asked. They assured us it was possible, and that’s when the dream started feeling real.
From Dream to Decision
At the show, we toured new and used Prevost models, asking endless questions and imagining the possibilities. Nashville Coach showed us two shells that could work, including a 2008 immigration bus with potential.
After a weekend of excitement, prayers, and a little budgeting stretch, we decided to go for it. We signed up to transform that 2008 immigration bus into a luxury motorhome tailored to our family’s needs.
The Conversion Process
Converting a Prevost isn’t a simple task. It’s a collaboration between you and the converter. For us, this meant months of planning, design decisions, and communication to ensure the final product met our vision.
The result? A stunning, one-of-a-kind home on wheels, complete with extra-long bunks, modern amenities, and the functionality we needed for full-time travel.
Why We Did It
This project wasn’t just about luxury—it was about creating a lifestyle that fit our family. We wanted a home that made travel easy, comfortable, and fun. It’s a choice to prioritize experiences over things and memories over convenience.
